LESSON PLAN ON TEACHING STRESS
Level : SMP
Class/semester : VII/I
Topic : stress pattern
Time : 15 minutes
Technique : drill repetition
Objective :
1. Improving pronunciation by focusing on word stress.
2. To make teachers more aware of their students’ pronunciation difficulties.
3. To make teachers more aware of the importance of stress and intonation in spoken English, and to show ways on focusing on stress and intonation in class.
Procedures :
1. The teacher explain about stress, syllable, stress symbols, include the example.
2. Teacher explain about how to use
- A small square (un- stressed syllable )
- A large square ( stressed syllable )
Then, teacher give the example.
3. Teacher read the phrase or sentence based on the key/stress symbol, then ask the students to repeat it.
Preparation :
STRESS
Stress are when a word has more than one syllable, one of them is spoken louder than rest.
Syllable is a beat of a word. The word “young” has one syllable/a beat
Examples ,
Hope (1 syllable) | A/ ‘bove (2 syllables) | ‘In/tro/duce (3 syllables) |
Eat (1 syllable) | A/ ‘gain (2 syllables) |
STRESS SYMBOLS
The syllable which is stressed/spoken louder is usually shown with the stress symbol.
Note :
- A small square (un- stressed syllable )
- A large square ( stressed syllable )
